Summer fresh makeup

Sweltering heat and humidity can wreak havoc with your summer makeup. Foundation may seem to melt or liquefy, and no powder stands up to those little beads of sweat that collect around your hairline. A modification of your regimen may be in order, and a few tricks will get you through a midday makeup meltdown.

Here are a few tricks to help keep your makeup Summer fresh

1. Skip the foundation, if possible, and opt for a tinted moisturizer. If foundation is necessary, limit application to the center of the face, steering clear of the hairline.

2. Consider switching to an oil-free formula during the summer months or dilute your everyday foundation with an oil-free moisturizer. This lighter coverage will fare better when temperatures heat up.

3. Dust any coverage with a little loose powder. Use blush sparingly, letting your sun-kissed cheeks grab the attention.

4. Blot any perspiration or oil buildup with non-powdered blotting papers. Or substitute a clean tissue, pressing gently into moist areas.

5. Remove under-eye foundation or powder buildup with a clean cotton swab. Resist the temptation to reapply unless you feel it absolutely necessary.

6. Reapply loose powder only. Pressed powder has the tendency to cake and clump when hit with moisture.

Hope these little tricks of the trade make you feel more confident about putting on makeup in the Summer!

Lite Brite!

For all you children of the 80’s I’m sure you remember this toy. A black electronic board that comes with all these tiny colorful bulbs you can use to make wonderful pictures. When plugged in it’s like a neon sign, full of color and very bright. This summer will surely be a “lite brite” type of summer! With bold rich colors like hot pink, sunshine yellow, deep sea blue, leafy green, and blood red to choose from you are sure to light things up! Don’t be afraid to mix these bold colors together. They are compliments of each other and play well together. So as we push out of these dark winter months, brighten up your closet some. Don’t be afraid of COLOR! You’ll be thanking me later. :-)

Your Spring Canvas!!!!

Spring makeup is all about fresh, youthful color! Paint from a palette of pastels, smooth on shimmer creams, and don’t sacrifice the SPF. As the flowers bloom and nature regains its color, so should your face. Spring is the flirtiest season for makeup application.

Before adding color to your face, make sure you’ve got a clean, smooth canvas. Use a light exfoliator to remove the dull flakes of dry skin, then smooth on a tinted moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15. Skip the heavy foundation; spring’s the time to let your skin breathe.

Sweep a bit of concealer under your eyes and onto blemishes, if needed. For extra eyeshadow adherence, you can apply a small amount of concealer to your upper lids, as well. Now that we’ve got your skin primed and glowing, let’s have fun with color!

Since springs’ so fresh and young, forego the contouring and sculpting you may have done in the winter, or may do again in the summer with bronzer. Smile big. Use a peachy-pink blush (complementary to all skin tones) to brighten your cheeks. Cream and liquid blushers melt into the skin best and look like the most natural flush. Using this color will make you look alert and happy, even after daylight saving’s time goes into effect. We could all use a little help then.

As far as your eyes go, the keyword is “experiment!” Stray from your usual black or brown liner to play with a pretty purple, turquoise, or green. Same goes for the shadows and mascaras. A monochromatic look might be overwhelming so avoid using three colors of blue shadow, a navy blue eyeliner, AND a turquoise mascara—all on the same day. Mix it up a bit. Try coral shadow with turquoise liner and your basic black mascara then coat just the tips of your lashes with a bright blue mascara.

Green eyes look especially bright with shades of violet, blues with orange or bronze, and hazel and brown with shades of pink shadows. Keep in mind, though, any color can look good with any set of eyes—you just have to find the right shade and consistency. That bright pink you love on your best friend may be a little too heavy for you; opt for a sheerer shade.

If your eyes are what you’re trying to play up, go with a sheer nude, pink, or peach gloss. These won’t overpower your eye makeup look and will prevent you from looking like you just escaped from the circus. If you think your lips are your best feature, go with a light bronze or very sheer cream shadow in the color of your choice, plus one swipe of black or brown mascara, and add pow to your mouth with a bright pink or peach. Stay away from bright red for day, but consider it for evening, if you like. Blue-based pinks and reds will make your teeth look whiter, but if you’re a peachy girl, try some of the over-the-counter tooth whiteners or whitening toothpastes and your smile will be just as dazzling.

You can top with a dusting of gold shimmer powder for glow and you’re done! Walk out the door feeling confident, carefree, and cute! Smile—you’ll be catching people’s eyes.

In the Nude…

In the Nude...

Getting NUDE produces more than just babies! ;-) During the Spring 2010 fashion shows that took place back in September, the popularity of the nude pump was evident. Yes…every woman should have her staple black pump. According to Rachel Zoe a black patent leather pump in a must! But every woman should also have a nude pump. The neutral color provides flexibility to coordinate with a variety of colors, allowing you to get the most out of your wardrobe. The color is “season-less” so you can wear it year round. In addition, the nude pump elongates the body. So for you shorties out there (like me) here’s yet another way we can give the illusion that we’re not as short as we really are! Ladies if you haven’t done so already, get in the NUDE!

Let’s hear it for the boys!

OMG! For the first time in my almost 3 years of parenting I have found a kids collection where the boys selection is far more cute than the girls! What am I talking about you ask? Htg 81 Kids, Forever 21’s new kids line. Sorry girls but this time, for once, this line isn’t really catering to you. But the boys are rocking it out! From the Kanye West inspired purple and black stripe zip up jacket to the acid washed distressed skinny jeans, your son will definitely look like a rock star with these looks. The only problem is these pieces are for the big kids. So for all of you moms with toddlers (like me), you’ll have to wait a few more years. I guess for right now I’ll stock up for my nephew and hope that his pieces will still be in good enough condition to pass down to Aiden (hopefully…with fingers crossed). But for all of you moms out there with kids between the ages of 8 to 12 check Htg 81 Kids out. You’ll have a ball shopping, I promise! :-)

What’s in for Spring 2010!!!

Trying to decide what your look should be for Spring, well here are some ideas to keep you up to speed with the latest trends!

Loose buns are classy and timeless. Ponytails are also fabulous.

Rummage around for red…lipstick that is. Red lips continue to be classy for spring. Just remember to keep your eye makeup light. Vibrant reds, corals and pinks that are sheer or glossy give the illusion you’ve been hanging out at the farmers’ market sampling juicy, fresh-picked produce. Dress them up with a bit of blush applied to the apples of the cheeks for a flushed look that’s of-the-moment, then melt-proof both by blotting so there’s not as much to slide off in the warm weather.

Long lashes are big. A huge trend  are permanent false eyelashes that are applied individually. They last a couple weeks and are especially big on the West Coast. Not ready to go the glued route? Layer on the mascara. Several coats should do you fine. (Don’t believe the old beauty ‘no’ that you should only apply 2 coats of mascara. That ‘don’t’ is now a ‘do’: You just can’t get lush, thick lashes with only two coats.

Don’t overbronze. Fake tanned skin is in again, but don’t go overboard. Instead, try layering your fake tan with a light tanning creme set with a tinted moisturizer or a bronzing powder. The best thing about bronzed skin? You can go light on the rest of your makeup. We love bronzed skin paired with a pink lip gloss and mascara.

Look to your kitchen to help you chill out and look gorgeous. Toners and milky cleansers should be kept inside your fridge for a quick morning pick-me-up—the cooling sensation feels amazing. Chilled yogurt can be used as a mask to restore your skin’s PH balance and soothe irritations from external aggressors like sun and wind. Add ¼ tablespoon of honey to one tablespoon of all-natural, plain yogurt for extra hydration.

Long waves are still hot, while straightening irons still are not. Ironed hair has been out now for a couple seasons and it stays out for spring. Instead, opt for straight, but full hair with a few loose waves you can get via Velcro rollers or winding hair around a full-barreled curling iron. Think your hair is too long? Don’t worry, as long as you keep it trim, super long hair is in.

Spring is all about shimmer. We love the look of shimmer on eyes and cheeks, especially on tanned skin.

To Haiti….with love!

It’s hard to believe that the devastating earthquake in Haiti happened about a month ago. Many of us have moved on back to our “regularly scheduled programs”, but the people of Haiti are still dealing with the effects of this tremendous disaster. And they still need our help!

The Council of Fashion Designers of America has created an initiative to help – Fashion for Haiti. Beginning February 16, retailers across the country will sell “Fashion for Haiti” t-shirts for only $25. All proceeds will go to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. This is a super easy way to show Haiti some love! After you purchase your tee, send us pics of you in it! Let’s see how many moms/moms-to-be/future moms we can get to participate. :-)

Where to purchase? Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks, J Crew, Bergdorfs, Macy’s, and Barney’s just to name a few. For a complete list please visit http://www.cfda.com/fashion-for-haiti/
