Your New “Boo”tique!

Sale signs

I am the self-proclaimed “Queen of Sales”!

I believe I can find a good sale anywhere . . . except for maybe the gas station! :-) Don’t you just LOVE a great sale? It totally excites me to find fabulous items for much less than the original price. What’s even greater is when I don’t know the item is on sale until the cashier rings it up and the discounted price comes on the screen! OMG . . . loooooooove it!

For those of you who love a sale as much as I do, there is a fairly new kind of online shopping experience that’s gaining popularity – online boutique sales.

Rue La LaRue La La – An exclusive, invitation-only online destination where Members discover premier-brand, private sale Boutiques, each open for just a brief window of time. Their focus is a well-edited collection of sought-after fashions from the best brand names in the world – combined with helpful service. Membership is free.

Gilt Groupe - Gilt FuseGilt Fuse – Gilt Groupe brought designer sample sales to the online community back in 2007. As membership grew, so did the requests for more edgy, trendy, fashion forward items for the urban girl. Thus the birth of Gilt Fuse, an online boutique gives you “style you love to live in for less”. Membership is free.

Now I must admit, when I hear of “designer” sales, I expect to see designer items marked down but still unaffordable. However, on both of these sites I’ve found merchandise for excellent (affordable) prices. Be warned: everything isn’t cheap but you CAN find good deals.  Give them a try!

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles!

The Rockstar

The Rockstar

Mr. GQ

Mr. GQ

Any Mom with a little boy knows the woes of shopping for your kid. Everywhere you go there is a huge selection of girls clothing and an itty bitty selection of boys stuff. This can be frustrating when it comes dressing your son, especially if you’re like me and hate the planes, trains, and automobile short sets that stores tend to have a ton of! Well I can’t give you a bigger selection than the girls, but I can give you some places that carry the cutest boy pieces ever. Starting with my favorite for jeans, H & M. I get all of my son’s skinny jeans (yes, yes I know . . .  little boy skinny jeans) and other styles of jeans from there. For shirts Target and Old Navy are the places to go! For shoes I have a variety of places that I shop, from Marshalls to Babies-R-Us.  And Aiden always has a fresh pair of Converse in his wardrobe. If you’re tired of the planes, trains, and automobiles, try out these places to get your little boy styling this fall season!

Ready Set Makeup!!!

3488600707_be97b7eddb As you know when it comes to being a mommy, that doesn’t mean you neglect making yourself look beautiful. Many would say that there is not enough time for me  because it all goes to taking care of the kids. You spend most of the time making them look and smell good, but what about YOU?  Well, I am glad you asked!

Makeup does not mean you need to look like you have it on, it is simply to enhance your natural beauty. Always moisturize your skin before applying your makeup in the morning.  To make this quick, find a good moisturizer that will also double as a lip moisturizer.  Add a small amount to your fingertips, and gently apply it to your entire facial area.  This will take less than 15 seconds and you will already feel better.

To save time, apply a concealer around your eyes and blend to hide any dark circles, or minimize any puffiness for a well rested look.  Now a dusting of loose or pressed powder will give you a finished look. Adding a cream blush with a little sheen will add color, and brighten up your face for an all day finished look. You can save more time by using your cream blush as a natural lip color. Simply use your finger to apply to your lips, and you have completed two separate steps in less than a minute.

When applying eyeliner, start at the inner corner of your eyes. Tilt your head slightly backwards, and turn your hand so the applicator is parallel to your lid. Slightly stretch your eye from the outside corner and apply eyeliner as though you are connecting dots to create a straight line. Not only does this add color to your eye makeup, but it gives you the bright-eyed appearance you long for.  Skip the bottom lashes as this can close the eye and make dark circles reappear.  Apply a touch of a neutral cream eye shadow color to the lid and blend.  Complete the look with a light coat of mascara and your eyes will look great!

Use a pencil on the eyebrow or a brow powder in a shade that matches your natural brow color.  If using a pencil, start at the bottom of the brow and work up and out.  If using a powder, lightly brush it into the brow filling in and shaping the brow with quick dashes of color.

The biggest thing to remember about quick, superb makeup is that you really do get what you pay for. It is better to pay for makeup that will last throughout the day without reapplications, then to spend the day adjusting your makeup.  You are a busy mom and you have more important things to do than spend time doing your makeup.

It’s Bananas!

Style from A to Zoe

When I was a fashion marketing teacher, I was always challenged to find interesting, creative ways to keep my wonderful fashion students engaged. Teenagers are a tough audience. I often say, if you can speak to a group of teenagers successfully, you can speak to ANYBODY! One would think the mere fact that they were in a fashion class in HIGH SCHOOL was enough to keep them happy, but that was not the case! So as part of my plan, I introduced the Rachel Zoe Project to my advanced students to give them the stylist perspective of the industry. They loved it and so did I (still do)!! As they completed brief written assignments along with each episode, I also introduced her book, Style from A to Zoe.

In this book Rachel talks about “the art of fashion, beauty, and everything glamour”.  She offers practical ways to bring a little glamour into your world, despite the fact that most of us don’t lead very glamorous lives.  I mean, there’s nothing glamorous about the crushed Cheerios in my backseat, the wet clothes I change during the potty training phase, or the ever present piles of laundry. But Rachel offers great suggestions for bringing some fabulosity into your life, improving your style and wardrobe in simple ways, and even how to throw a great party! While life and day-to-day responsibilities can seem a bit unglamorous, we all have a little glamour girl inside screaming to come out!

So the next time you’re in the book store or maybe even the library, sneak away from the kiddie section and look for Style from A to Zoe. In the words of Rachel, “it’s bananas”!
