Polished!

As the mom of a 2 year old (who will be 3 next week) and a 5 1/2 year old, it’s quite easy to go ridiculously long periods of time without a manicure and/or pedicure. However, in recent months I’ve been making an effort to polish my fingernails more. It’s funny how such a small thing can add a spark of color, express your personality, and make you feel good! Even though I know your days are busy and filled with “non-nail friendly” tasks such as washing dishes, cleaning tubs, and other forms of mommy manual labor, I encourage you to take a few minutes at least once a week to sit down and paint your nails (or visit the nail salon to have them painted). Add a little spunk to your outfits with hot nail colors!!!

Here are a few of the latest trends in nail color. (We love that nail color has trends!)

1. Navy polish (some girls like black polish, but try Russian Navy by OPI)

2. Minx nails (thin polymer sheets are placed on nails to create a shiny, futuristic look; Beyonce often wears these; also spotted on the Chanel runway.)

3. Ombre nails (fade to black for this cool effect but you’ll definitely have to visit the salon for this…please don’t try this at home :-) )

4. Glitter it up! (rose-gold flecks in black lacquer to glam it up)

Spring Forward Best of Beauty

It seems like holidays and seasons are beginning to run all together now. As soon as one is over the other is being advertised or celebrated within days. Well, now the makeup industry is jumping on this bandwagon by already introducing Spring 2010 makeup collections. I don’t really think that this is a bad idea since we are all having winter blues right now with all of the snow and cold weather. So why not pick yourself up with a little early spring color?

Rummage around for red…lipstick that is.  Red lips continue to be classy for spring. Just remember to keep your eye makeup light.

Long lashes are big. A huge trend  are permanent false lashes applied individually. They last a couple of weeks and are especially big on the West Coast. Not ready to go the glued route? Layer on the mascara. Several coats should do you fine. (Don’t believe the old beauty ‘no’ that says you should only apply 2 coats of mascara. That ‘don’t’ is now a ‘do’: You just can’t get lush, thick lashes with only two coats.

Don’t overbronze. Fake tanned skin is in again, but don’t go overboard. Instead, try layering your fake tan with a light tanning creme set with a tinted moisturizer or a bronzing powder. The best thing about bronzed skin? You can go light on the rest of your makeup. We love bronzed skin paired with a pink lip gloss and mascara.

Here are a some of the makeup lines that have already released (or will be releasing very soon) their spring 2010 collections:

  • Bobbi Brown Cabana Corals Collection
  • Chanel Les Impressions de Chanel Collection
  • Clarins Cotton Flower Collection
  • Clinique Juiced Up Color Collection
  • Dior Boudoir Look Collection
  • Estee Lauder Michael Kors Very Hollywood Color Collection

  • Guerlain Cherry Blossom Collection
  • Lancome O My Rose Collection
  • Laura Mercier for Spring Collection
  • MAC in Lillyland Collection
  • Maybelline Eyes Studios for Spring
  • Nars for Spring Collection
  • shu uemura Egerie Collection
  • Smashbox Heartbreaker Collection

    2010…the year of Anti-Frumpiness!

Mommy Fashionality declares that 2010 is the Year of Anti-Frumpiness! This is a new year, a new decade, and a new opportunity for you to be your fabYOUlous self! For those of you who may not know what “frumpy” is, FRUMPY is defined as “dowdy, drab, unkempt, or unfashionable”. Do any of these words describe you? Ladies, in 2010 there’s NO EXCUSE for you to look less than your best! Don’t blame your children, your man (who probably loves to see you looking foxy), your lack of time, lack of clothes, lack of money, lack of energy, etc. It’s time to step our game up!

To all of the fabYOUlous moms who represent and stay fly, we applaud you! Go ladies!! Keep doing what you do but don’t forget to help out another mom who may need a little direction. For our fabYOUlous moms who need a little help, never fear…Mommy Fashionality is here!!! Help is all around you. Saying NO to FRUMPINESS doesn’t have to be complicated. And it doesn’t mean you have to buy a whole new wardrobe. It simply means be age-appropriate, be CURRENT (it’s nice you can fit some things from 10 years ago but….NO), be a little unpredictable, be experimental, and have fun with your look! And don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it….but please consider carefully WHO you ask! ;-)

Being a mom doesn’t mean sacrificing your fabulosity! Because you are a mom is all the more reason for you to take care of yourself. In the words of Deion Sanders, when you LOOK GOOD you FEEL GOOD!!! :-)

    Mixed Chicks

As I sat down to read Lucky Magazine the other day, a favorite monthly ritual of mine, I saw an advertisement that I thought I’d share with you. The ad was for a leave-in conditioner by a company called Mixed Chicks. Instantly the named intrigued me, so I decided to visit the website to see what this company is all about. And though I’m not technically a “mixed chick” (although some would argue that we’re all mixed in some way), I love what these ladies are doing. Wendi Levy and Kim Etheredge started “Mixed Chicks” hair product line for people of all races and nationalities with curly hair. Both children of interracial relationships, their goal was to create good, quality products for those with natural curls.

    Kim Etheredge/Wendi Levy

As the mom of a child with naturally curly hair, I’ve experienced the struggle of finding products that work well. For the Mommy Fashionality moms looking for hair products for  your curly haired little ones or even for yourself, give Mixed Chicks a try! You can find information about the company and products on their website, MixedChicks.net. You can order products online as well.

    Happy Shopping!

    Help Haiti!

When you look at the situation in Haiti, the top spring trends for 2010, hot new beauty products, and where to get the best deals all seem so insignificant. Today Mommy Fashionality would like to encourage all of our readers to HELP HAITI! The Haitian community needs our love and support in this time of major devastation and disaster. Don’t just sit back and watch the news coverage. Please do something! With the same urgency and energy we put forth to grab great deals at the mall, we must lend our assistance to people in need. If you are not in a position to donate clothes, food, or money you can still support by offering up your PRAYERS. Prayer still works! God bless you and may God bless the people of Haiti in a tremendous way.

    Sincerely,

The Mommy Fashionality Crew – Deena, Stevie, and Ericka

30 Days of a Fashionable YOU!

“This year I plan to wear heels all the time (except at work).” Kerry
When you wake up in the morning and put on your clothes, can you honestly say you put thought into what you put on, or is it just the quickest thing you could get together? I can’t lie, even being a stylist, I put much thought into others style but little-to-none in my own. This year I am changing that! This year the first stylish thoughts I have will go into creating my own outfit. It’s so easy as a mother, whether working inside or outside of the home, to forget about your own style. You’re so busy dressing others that your own style sometimes goes to the birds. :-) Well I challenge you, take 30 days and put your style first. Take pictures and send them to us at mommyfashionality@gmail.com. We’ll post them on our page so other moms can see the new, well-thought out YOU and get some inspiration! And hopefully after 30 days you will continue being the new stylish YOU!
